CCC work rememberd, applauded in ANF

Warren Times-Observer, 8/20.2011.

Excerpt: The CCC was formed in 1933 during the Great Depression by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to combat unemployment. According to the National Association of Civilian Conservation Corps Alumni, Roosevelt "proposed to recruit thousands of unemployed young men, enroll them in a peacetime army, and send them to into battle against destruction and erosion of our natural resources. Before it was over, over three million young men engaged in a massive salvage operation, the most popular experiment of the New Deal."

CCC camps popped up throughout the nation, and in Pennsylvania, 16 camps were built throughout the four counties of the Allegheny National Forest and left a legacy that is still visible and used today

As Summer Ends, Lake Weeds Still A Problem

Jamestown Post-Journal, 8/21/2011.

Excerpt: Despite efforts to keep Chautauqua Lake clean, many think more needs to be done in order to keep tourists drawn to the waterbody.

"I can tell you firsthand, the weeds are actually horrible," said Capt. Mathew Stage, who runs the Chautauqua Belle on the lake daily.

"It's worse ten-fold," he said about the weed problem in the lake compared to previous years. "I feel really bad," he said about attempts being made by the Chautauqua Lake Association to pull out weeds "by the truck-load."

He said his worry is that the lake generates tax revenues for the county from tourists coming to enjoy it. He therefore questions why more county money is not being put back into maintaining the lake.

Stage said tourism is one of "the few things left in our county" that employs people, adding more should be spent to insure the lake continues to draw tourists

Conewango Ave. work on track to hit Sept. 29 target completion date

Warren Times-Observer, 8/12/2011.

Excerpt: "The only thing impacting it now is weather," Miskimmin said. "Unfortunately, the long-range forecast calls for rain several days in a row."

Remaining work includes Americans with Disabilities Act ramps, Miskimmin said, as well as driveway adjustments, completion of a wearing course, curbing, signage and pavement markings. Due to conditions on the street, he said the project has been challenging.

When the project concludes, Miskimmin said motorists can expect a much better ride. Drainage will also improve, he said, as there will be new curb lines.

"The old lines were nonexistent or in terrible shape," Miskimmin said. "The ride will be better because the trolley ties were eliminated."
