More than a dozen people who attended the 1933 dedication arrived at the park aboard a red 1933 stretch Cadillac and 1927 White Motor Co. bus, once operated by the Glacier Transport Co.

"I was only 7 years old (at the original ceremony)," said Creston resident Les Mahugh, who helped build the Logan Pass visitor center in the early 1960s and assisted after the 1964 flood. "I remember there was an awful lot of people up there, and I remember there were tepees set up."

The promise of an interchange with Interstate 90 drove development along Illinois 173 for more than a decade.

The expectation spurred developers’ drive to subdivide and build. Retailers from Menards to Target to Gordmans set up shop there. Even Kohl’s Department Store moved out of its location at Machesney Park Mall to be closer to the bustling state highway.

City officials hope gas woes boost local pool numbers

Warren City officials are hoping that the rising price of gasoline will convince people that the Municipal Pool is a preferable alternative to driving to the beach.

"The (municipal) pool is here, it's convenient and reasonably price," said Cindy Strandburg, the city's parks and recreation coordinator.

Frances Cole (obituary)

Frances Marie Scalise Cole, age 81, formerly of Hammond Street, Warren, passed into Heaven on Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at Hamot Medical Center, following hip surgery.

Frances was the daughter of the late Anthony and Frances Scalise of Warren, PA.

Frances Scalise married Francis John Cole in 1949, in Warren, PA. Her beloved husband preceded her in death in 1990.

Frances and her husband owned Warren Steel Company. Frances worked in some coffee shops in Warren and also worked as a nurse’s aid at Warren General Hospital. Her last job was an associate in the woman’s department at Bon Ton in the Warren Mall.

She was a member of The First Church of God and was very active there.

Frances loved to play cards, was an excellent knitter, and enjoyed her girlfriend’s company. She loved to spoil and spend time with her four grandchildren, Jayna ColeSpigelmeyer, husband, Carl, Amanda Farr, husband, Joe, Abigail Mouyard, and Benjamin Mouyard, wife, Erica.

Frances was diagnosed with Picks Disease in 1995 and moved to Springhill Apartments in Erie and then to Forestview Skilled Nursing in 1997.

Everyone loved Frances at Forestview and she won the hearts of so many there.

She is survived by her three children, Susan Kovacs of Pittsburgh, husband, Darryl, Lee Cole of Warren, wife, Maria, and Terri Mouyard, husband, Francis, of Erie. Three of her siblings still survive, Richard Scalise (Alice), Jim Scalise (Grace), and Mamie Spear. She is survived by six greatgrandchildren, Caden, Gracyn, and Addisyn Farr and Lucas, Adam, and Elizabeth Mouyard. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are being handled by Peterson-Blick Funeral Home and viewing is from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 20th and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21st, preceding a short service at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Westview Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to any Alzheimer’s Association or charity of ones’ choice.

Margaret Rock (obituary)

Margaret M. Rock, 89, of Warren, PA, died peacefully Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at the Rouse Warren County Home, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Newcastle, WY, on April 17, 1919 to the late John and Columba Catterina Armanini.

Upon the death of her mother, she moved at the age of three with her family to Brandy Camp, PA, where she attended public schools and graduated from Horton High School.

Upon the death of her father, she moved to Warren to pursue a nursing career and graduated from the Warren General Hospital School of Nursing in 1941.

In 1944, she married Dominic J. Rock, a life long resident of Warren.

She has lived most her life in the Warren area and has been a long time resident on Walnut Street in Warren’s West Side and at the Rouse Suites for the past five years.

She was a registered nurse in Warren for 40 years, initially working at the Warren General Hospital and later at the Warren State Hospital, where she retired in 1981.

She was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church and the church altar society. She was a member of the Warren General Hospital Alumni, Pennsylvania Association of Retired Employees, Warren Senior Center and the American Legion Post 135 Ladies Auxiliary.

Her hobbies included bridge and line dancing, both of which she has taught.

Margaret took great pride in her grandchildren, they were a big part of her life.

She is survived by two sons, Dennis Rock and his wife, Anne of Youngsville, PA and Gail Rock and his wife, Helie of Hilo, HI; a twin sister, Mary Russo of Warren, PA; five grandchildren, Joseph Rock, Manhatten Beach, CA, Julie Talbot and her husband, Scott of Palatine, IL, Tara Tichenor of Warren, PA, Elizabeth Rock of San Diego, CA and Tyler Rock from North Shore, Oahu, HI; three greatgrandchildren, Savannah and Jacob Tichenor and Sadie Talbot; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dominic J. Rock; one sister, Louise Grazioli; and two brothers, James and Henry Armanini.

Friends may call at the Donald E. Lewis Funeral Home, Inc., 304 East Street, Warren, PA, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, where a vigil service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m.

A mass of christian burial will be conducted at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, with Rev. Fr. Walter E. Packard, Pastor, officiating.

Interment will be in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Cemetery.
